Can the 2016 COPO Camaro break its own $700,000 record at auction?

The first 2016 COPO Camaro is going up for auction at the Barrett-Jackson event in Scottsdale, Arizona, this month. All proceeds from the purpose-built drag car will go to the United Way.

Chevy introduced the latest COPO at the SEMA show in November. The company is only building 69 examples of the car, which, like previous versions, is designed for NHRA’s Stock and Super Stock Eliminator classes.

Buyers can select from several blown and naturally-aspirated engines including a supercharged 350, a 427 and a new LT-based 376, all V8s. All three are connected to a race-prepped transmission. The auction car sports the 350-cid V8 with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger and a THM-350 automatic transmission.

Number 001 comes with a personalized look created by new Chevy driver and NHRA star Courtney Force.

Proceeds from Barrett-Jackson lot will benefit the United Way

“I was extremely honored to work with Chevrolet and help design the 2016 COPO Camaro,” said Courtney Force.   “The bright red color and the signature slash marks towards the back on the car bring a part of my Traxxas Chevrolet Camaro Funny Car to the COPO Camaro, which I think is really cool. The proceeds from this car go to a great cause and benefit the United Way, so it's an awesome project all around."

COPO, by the way, stands for Central Office Production Order, a system used in the ‘60s to order unusual combinations of options.

The last “first” COPO in 2014 crossed the same block at Barrett-Jackson and sold for a whopping $700,000 to NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. Similar examples are currently on eBay for about $100,000, in case your wallet is feeling heavy.

The COPO will cross the block on Friday, Jan. 29 at about 7 p.m. EST. Check out the auction live on the Velocity Network from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. this Friday.
